Sternum Update

I finally was able to see my doctor to get a check up on my sternum after my crash.

During the exam, everything was going well. Everything seemed to be good up until she pushed down on my sternum. At that moment, tears just wouldn't stop falling from my eyes! After the exam, my doc told me, fortunately, she did not think that I broke my sternum. Instead, I suffered from a chest contusion. So, I'm gonna be icing and taking IBProfin until my body starts feeling better.

Today, my soccer team (i have not been playing since I have been focusing on triathlons) needed a female to play... so my bf convinced me to come out. It was so much fun! My chest was sore but did not hurt. In the end, I think the running and movement helped my chest feel better! :)

Honda Element

Yesterday morning, My BF and I took a quick trip to Utah in hopes of purchasing a used car. My long time, reliable Mustang has done me so well for the last 12 years but with my bf and my extra needs, Sexy Rexy just wasn't going to survive. While I love me car - had him since I was a senior in high school, it was just that time to go for a new ride.

To fit our triathlon/snowboarding/skiing/potential living situation needs, we have been drooling over the Honda Element. Its design is perfect for us. Not only can we fit both of our bikes in the back without taking off our tires, but the seats fold up which will help us in so many different ways. Snowboards and such can be thrown in to the back and when we get home from Tahoe, we can easily rinse out the back to get it back to its cleanly state!

This was a huge purchase for the two of us! Pat even acknowledged that this buy is a huge commitment for the both of us.

When we arrived at the airport, someone from the dealership brought the car out to us and it was love at first ride! The decision was easy. It wasn't even a question when we got to the dealership. All we did was oogle at the possibilities of this car. So many great features to use!

The 11 hour ride back to SF was well worth the trip. We are so happy and cannot wait to take our Element on all of our outdoorsy trips!

Balancing life and Ironman Training

It's my third day as an official high school special education teacher and my x week into IM training!! Adjusting from paraprofessional to teacher has been much more difficult than I thought. I am constantly working to figure out the best lesson plans for my students. I want to develop something engaging for my math students. Math can be so mundane, so I want to really try to think out of the box and encourage my students to think critically beyond the typical math equations.

On top of that, I have to figure out how to stay on top of my training schedule! At least I have a coach that creates a schedule for me and all I have to do is follow it. It makes it so easy and creates a simple routine for me to follow.

Yesterday, though, I did have a training buster. On my way to a work training session, I was riding on the street. My commuter bike has been having some difficulties lately getting into the last gear (baby baby gear). So, as I pedaled up this one last hill, it was steep enough that I needed to get out of my saddle. While pedaling, the chain didn't catch, my foot lost placement in the pedal cages, and I flew forward - knocking my bike all the way down. On the way down, my sternum landed on the handlebars roughly and my head knocked the pavement. It was a super rough fall. I got up, adjusted my bike and rode on - to make it to training on time.

When I finally got home, my sternum was not feeling good. I couldn't lift my arms without pain. When I laid down on the couch, I felt excruciating pain. When I moved anywhere, I had pain. But when I coughed, i felt like I was gonna die! Fortunately, my boyfriend is the best and took care of me as much as he could.

I woke up this morning to soreness/pain but was well enough to get back to VeloSF. The pain has subsided and I am feeling a lot better. Coughing is still extremely painful but at least I can walk around and talk to my students without tears in my eyes.

Moral of the story: Don't procrastinate on getting your bike tuned up. I was lucky that I didn't injured any worse than I had. I'm definitely getting myself an appointment to get my baby fixed!
